How much does culinary school cost?

Published 2026–27 prices from three US culinary schools, next to a Swiss culinary degree that pays you during the year. Every figure dated and sourced.

At three well-known US culinary schools, a first year or diploma costs about $56,000 to $69,000 with housing and meals at 2026–27 published prices, before health insurance. In Switzerland, the first year at BHMS in Lucerne is CHF 40'200, about US$48,600 at the October 2026 rate, with your room, meals, insurance, uniform and knives included, and a six-month paid internship inside the year.

Tuition alone tells you very little, because schools bundle different things into their price. Below you'll find what three US schools actually charge, what a Swiss programme charges, and what changes when half of every year is paid work. All dollar conversions are approximate, at the October 2026 rate of about US$1.21 per Swiss franc.

How much do culinary schools cost in the US?

These are the prices the schools publish themselves for 2026–27. We've kept each school's own units, because a semester, a year and an eight-month diploma aren't the same thing.

What a first year adds up to

  • CIA: two semesters of tuition, meals and fees come to $46,470. With a double room it's $56,280, plus $2,100 a year of health insurance and $1,194 for supplies and uniforms in the first semester.
  • Johnson & Wales: tuition, the required meal plan and the least expensive room come to $59,768, before the $476 new-student fee, the $250 activity fee, the toolkit fee and $2,670 of student health insurance.
  • ICE: $46,950 for the diploma plus about $22,376 of living costs by ICE's own estimate, so close to $69,000 for eight months in New York if you don't live at home.

Which costs do culinary school prices leave out?

Four things decide whether a sticker price is honest: housing, meals, health insurance and kit. US colleges usually list them separately, and a diploma school often leaves housing out altogether. Ask every school the same four questions:

  • Where will I live, and what does it cost? In a city like New York this can be a third of your budget.
  • How many meals a week are included? A culinary student eats a lot of what they cook, but not every meal.
  • Is health insurance in the price or on top? At CIA and JWU it's a separate line.
  • Who pays for knives and uniforms? It's a few hundred to over a thousand dollars in the first term.

How much does culinary school cost in Switzerland?

At the Swiss Culinary Academy by BHMS in Lucerne, each year has one all-inclusive price. It covers tuition, a shared two-bed apartment at the Lakeside Campus, meals, mandatory health insurance, the internship placement service, visa and permit administration, internet and airport pickup, plus uniforms and knives on the culinary programmes. Does a paid internship change what culinary school costs?

It changes your cash flow. Every year at BHMS is six months of study and six months of paid work in a hotel or restaurant kitchen. In Switzerland the gross minimum for interns from recognised schools is CHF 2'390 a month (2027 rate, about US$2,900), set by the national hospitality labour agreement. Six months is CHF 14'340 gross, and all three bachelor placements in Switzerland add up to more than CHF 43'000, about US$52,000.

That's gross pay. Board, lodging and social insurance come off it where the employer provides them. In resort and countryside placements with staff housing and meals, BHMS students commonly keep around CHF 1'500 a month. Treat it as income during the year, not as a reduction of the fee: what you keep depends on the placement.

Kitchen placements at US schools work differently from school to school, and whether you're paid depends on the employer. Ask about it directly, because over a degree it's a five-figure difference. See how the Swiss internship model works.

US figures are 2026–27 published prices; BHMS figures are the 2027 fee in Swiss francs, converted at the October 2026 rate. The franc moves against the dollar, so your bill in dollars can change even when the price doesn't.

Certificate, diploma or bachelor: what are you paying for?

A certificate (10 weeks at BHMS) teaches core kitchen skills fast and costs least, but it carries no internship. A diploma (one year) adds 270 logged kitchen hours and your first paid placement. A bachelor's degree takes three years and ends with management modules: that's the route people mean when they search for a culinary management degree, and it's the one that leads to running a kitchen or a food business. The BHMS BA is awarded jointly with Robert Gordon University in the UK. If you already hold a degree, the MSc in Culinary Entrepreneurship is the one-year option.

How do students pay for culinary school?

Most families combine savings with income and, for US schools, federal aid or loans. In Switzerland the paid internships are the financing argument: six months of every year at a gross minimum of CHF 2'390 a month. If you're still at school, the two-week summer camp fee is credited towards first-year tuition of an eligible BHMS bachelor if you enrol within two years. Every fee is on the BHMS culinary fees 2027 page.

What this means for you

  • Compare all-in prices per year, not tuition. Add housing, meals, insurance and kit to every quote.
  • Ask whether the placement is paid. Six paid months a year changes how much you need to borrow.
  • Budget in the school's currency. A Swiss fee is set in francs; your dollar cost moves with the exchange rate.

Questions

Culinary school costs, answered

How much does culinary school cost per year?

At three well-known US culinary schools (CIA, Johnson & Wales, ICE), a year or diploma with housing and meals runs about $56,000 to $69,000 at 2026–27 published prices, before health insurance. In Switzerland, Year 1 at BHMS in Lucerne is CHF 40'200 (about US$48,600 at the October 2026 rate), with a shared room, meals, insurance, uniforms and knives inside that one fee.

How much is a culinary arts bachelor degree in total?

The three-year BA in Culinary Arts at BHMS costs about CHF 123'600 in total (about US$149,600), all-inclusive. The three paid six-month internships built into it pay a gross minimum of more than CHF 43'000 in Switzerland, which is income during the degree rather than a discount on the fee.

Is culinary school in Switzerland more expensive than in the US?

Usually not. The BHMS first year (about US$48,600) comes in below the US schools in this guide once you add housing and meals to their tuition, and it already includes health insurance and visa administration. The difference is the paid internship: six months a year at a gross minimum of CHF 2'390 a month in Switzerland.

What is the cheapest way to train as a chef?

A short certificate costs least. At BHMS the 10-week Certificate in Culinary Operations is CHF 23'025 (about US$27,900) with accommodation and meals, but it has no internship. Many chefs also train on the job without a school; a programme buys you structured kitchen hours, a qualification and placements.
