How Much Does Culinary School Cost? A Year, Line by Line
The tuition line is only part of the bill. Here is what a year costs at US colleges on average, what a year in Lucerne costs in dollars, and what each price leaves out.
Tuition and fees alone run from $4,210 to $46,350 a year, depending on the kind of US college you pick.[1] At the Swiss Culinary Academy by BHMS, a first year in Culinary Arts costs CHF 40,200 (about $48,846), and that one figure covers tuition, a room and meals.
Those two numbers don't measure the same thing, so let's pull them apart. We convert every Swiss price below at 0.8230 francs per US dollar, the Federal Reserve rate for October 30, 2026.[2] That makes CHF 1 about $1.215. If the rate moves, the dollar amounts move with it.
How much does culinary school cost at a US college?
Here are the average sticker prices for the 2026-27 school year. They cover full-time undergraduates at all US colleges, not culinary schools alone.[1]
| Type of college | Average tuition and fees, 2026-27 |
|---|---|
| Public two-year, in-district | $4,210[1] |
| Public four-year, in-state | $12,290[1] |
| Public four-year, out-of-state | $32,730[1] |
| Private nonprofit four-year | $46,350[1] |
Those figures cover tuition and fees only. Housing, food, books and kitchen gear come on top. A culinary program may also price differently from the college average, so ask each school for its full cost of attendance.
Many US students pay less than the sticker price. Net tuition and fees at private nonprofit four-year colleges fall to an estimated $17,280 in 2026-27 once grants are counted.[1] Keep that in mind when you read the Swiss figures below. They're a flat price.

What does the Swiss price include, and what does it leave out?
The operating expense pays for your mandatory health insurance, the internship placement service, your visa or B-permit and local tax, e-campus and internet, and airport pick-up when you arrive as a new student. Your room is a two-bed shared apartment at the Lakeside Campus, with no kitchen.
Upgrades cost extra. A shared apartment with a kitchen at the City Campus adds CHF 1'200 (about $1,458). A standard studio at Lakeside adds CHF 4'900 (about $5,954), and a superior studio at the City Campus adds CHF 7'900 (about $9,599). The fee sheet doesn't say what period these surcharges cover. Before you plan, ask admissions whether they apply per semester or per year. There's also a CHF 1'500 (about $1,823) room deposit, which you get back.
Flights aren't on the list of what the fee covers, so budget for them yourself.
Does the paid internship change the cost?
It changes what you take home. Every bachelor year pairs six months of study with a six-month paid internship. The Swiss hospitality minimum for interns is CHF 2'404 gross a month from January 1, 2027, about $2,921. Over the three internships of a bachelor, that adds up to over CHF 43'000 gross, about $52,248, before deductions for board, lodging and social insurance.
That's gross pay, not savings, and it's a minimum. Still, it's a line the US sticker prices above don't have.
What this means for you
Don't set a US sticker price next to CHF 40,200 and call it a comparison. Start with the tuition lines side by side: the Swiss tuition is CHF 29,800, about $36,208. Then add what each school leaves out: rent, food, insurance, books, knives and uniforms.
Ask every school the same four questions. What's the total cost of attendance for one year? Is housing in it? Do kitchen kit and uniforms cost extra? Are internships paid, and by how much? Write the answers in one table and the gaps show up quickly.
