How Much Is Culinary School? The Full Program Price

Most price lists show one year. Here is the price of the whole program, with the Swiss fee converted to dollars and a list of what each price leaves out.

How much is culinary school? Count the whole program, not just one year, and published tuition and fees run from about $8,420 for two years at a public community college to about $185,400 for four years at a private nonprofit college. That's before housing and food.[1] At the Swiss Culinary Academy by BHMS, you'd pay CHF 123,600 for the three-year bachelor, with housing and meals inside the price. That's about $150,182.[4][2]

How much is culinary school at a US college?

These averages cover all undergraduate study, not culinary programs alone. They're still the best primary yardstick for the tuition line. The table takes each 2026-27 average and multiplies it by the usual length of that path. I kept the price flat across the years, so a real four-year bill will land a little higher.[1]

Type of collegeTuition and fees, 1 yearYearsTuition and fees, total
Public two-year, in-district$4,2102$8,420
Public four-year, in-state$12,2904$49,160
Private nonprofit four-year$46,3504$185,400

These are sticker prices for tuition and fees only. Room, board, knives and uniforms come on top. After grants, students pay far less: an estimated $1,920 a year at public four-year colleges and $17,280 at private nonprofit ones in 2026-27.[1]

You pay the Swiss fee as one invoice for the year. It's quoted in francs, so I converted it at 0.8230 francs per US dollar, the Federal Reserve rate for October 30, 2026.[2] Pick a different day and every dollar figure moves a little.

The bachelor is a dual degree with Robert Gordon University in the UK. You can enter Year 1 at 17 with a high school diploma.

What's inside the Swiss price, and what costs extra?

The invoice covers tuition, a shared two-bed apartment at the Lakeside Campus, meals, mandatory health insurance and the internship placement service. It also covers visa and B-permit processing with local tax, e-campus and internet, and airport pick-up. Uniforms and knives are in the culinary totals too. The MSc total leaves them out.[4]

Here's what you can add:

  • Shared Superior at the City Campus (3–4 beds, with kitchen): CHF 1,200, about $1,458.
  • Studio Standard at Lakeside: CHF 4,900, about $5,954.
  • Studio Superior at the City Campus: CHF 7,900, about $9,599.
  • A refundable room deposit: CHF 1,500, about $1,823.

The fee sheet doesn't say whether the surcharges are per semester or per year, so ask admissions before you plan around one.

Does a paid internship change the price?

It won't lower the invoice, but it changes what you take home from the years. Every programme year ends with a paid six-month internship, and the bachelor has three.[6] In 2027 the Swiss hospitality minimum for interns is CHF 2,404 gross a month.[5] Do all three internships in Switzerland and you'd earn over CHF 43,000 gross, about $52,248, before deductions for board, lodging and social insurance.[6]

What this means for you

Don't line one number up against another. Compare what each price covers. A $49,160 four-year total is tuition and fees only. A CHF 123,600 total includes your housing, meals and insurance, and it comes with 18 months of paid kitchen work. Neither is the right answer for everyone.

School isn't the only route, either. For chefs and head cooks, the typical entry requirement is a high school diploma or equivalent. Some people train on the job or through apprenticeships. Many attend culinary programs, and most programs require a kitchen internship or apprenticeship.[3] The median pay was $62,470 a year in May 2025.[3] That's the number to hold your total against.

Before you pick a school, ask each one for four things in writing: the total for the whole program, what's not on the invoice, how many hours you'll spend in a kitchen, and what the internship pays.
